Objective of the Extension Activity: The objectives of conducting a soap making activity using rancid oil for women of nearby villages on International Women's Day are:

·       To educate women about the importance of reusing and recycling materials.

·       To teach women how to make soap using rancid oil.

·       To provide an opportunity for women to learn a new skill that can be used for personal or economic purposes.

Summary:

An extension activity on “soap making” was organized by Centre for Women’s Studies in collaboration with Department of Chemistry, IIS (deemed to be University) on 2nd March, 23 at Govt. Sr. Sec. School, Neota, Jaipur. International Women's Day is a day to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women around the world. In honor of this day, a soap making activity was conducted for the women and students of Neota village. This activity not only celebrates women`s day but also educates them about the importance of reusing and recycling materials, such as rancid oil, to make something useful. In this activity coordinators acquainted the participants about the process of homemade soap using used/rancid oil. The other ingredients used are surfactant, alkali etc. which are easily available in the market. The list of materials and process of soap making was shared with participants. Demonstration was given by Dr. Priyanka Jain. She also explained the harmful effects of rancid oil if it is used again for cooking purposes.

In this activity, near about 60 participants were participated and all of them were enthusiastically involved in this activity through learning by doing, moreover they were highly curious to know more about homemade soap of different flavours.

 

Outcome:

The soap making activity using rancid oil for women of nearby villages on International Women's Day is a great way to celebrate women day while educating them about recycling and reusing materials. This activity also provided an opportunity for women to learn a new skill that can be used for personal or economic purposes.
